Ten St. Catherine's students visited St. Jacques school in Haiiti as part of a partnership between the two schools.
As many St. Catherine’s students were heading out of town for summer vacations, 10 Upper School girls were making the trip of a lifetime to Haiti. Earlier this month, the group visited St. Jacques, an Episcopal School in Les Bayes, Haiti that St. Catherine’s has entered into a partnership with recently. “This first journey was all about building relationships and seeing Haiti,” said Rev. Anne West, who led the trip for St. Catherine’s. “We spent time with our partner school and visited many other Episcopal Schools during our week.” The 10 students who made the trip were rising seniors Kaki Jennison, Marshall Moore and Wrenn Schoeffler; rising juniors Franny Blanchard, Melina Bricker, Clay Coddington, Bettina Geissbuehler and Jane McGehee; and rising sophomores India Butler and Lale Herguner. The students were accompanied by Community Service Coordinator Betsy Ernsberger, Rev. Drew Johnson, Upper School teacher Pontus Hiort and West. The group spent a day in Cange, Haiti touring the Partners in Health clinic begun by Paul Farmer in addition to the time spent at St. Jacques. “We saw some of the deepest poverty I have ever experienced; and yet, we were blessed by the kindness of many, not the least was the joy on the children's faces when we spent time at the school,” West said. The team that traveled to Haiti will meet over the summer to discuss which projects they want to take on for the Schoo,l as well as how to present the projects to the St. Catherine’s community. The plan is for yearly visits to St. Jacques in addition to regular communication and support. St. Jacques is one of 17 schools under the leadership of Pere' (Father) Jeannot of Haiti. This partnership has been nurtured and orchestrated with the help of The Rev. Roger Bowen, who spends much of his time in retirement pairing schools together. Rev. Bowen spoke to St. Catherine’s students this past school year and led this recent trip to Haiti. Through the National Association of Episcopal Schools (NAIS), Rev. Bowen started more than 60 school partnerships such as the one between St. Catherine’s and St. Jacques.
