Libby Parrish, Austin Smithers and Bri Miller were among the St. Catherine’s seniors trying to come out on top in their final League of Independent Schools indoor track and field championship.
Nine event victories, five school records and one meet record later, the Saints wound up on top — for the fifth year in a row.
“There are a lot of seniors, and they stepped up,” said St. Catherine’s coach Sherry Edwards. “You know how things are in cycles — we’re at the top of that cycle now, and we’re rolling.”
The St. Catherine’s squad started its success early at the St. Christopher’s-hosted meet, which featured the LIS girls championship and Prep League boys championship.
Miller got the team’s scoring started early, jumping 17 feet, 9 inches for first place in the long jump. She followed that with first place in the triple jump and second in the 55-meter hurdles.
Smithers entered Saturday’s competition trying to set a school record as part of the 800 relay and to beat the LIS record in the 55-meter dash.
She accomplished both, setting the pace as the first runner on the relay team and setting a LIS meet record in the 55-meter dash with 7.44. Saint Gertrude’s Kelly Miller set the previous mark in 1994.
“I was so excited because last weekend I was hoping to break it, and I didn’t, so that was disappointing,” Smithers said. “But then I came back, and I didn’t give up. It was really exciting and really rewarding.”
Parrish repeated the success that she has had over the past four years in the 1,000- and 1,600-meter runs. She fended off Norfolk Academy’s Julia Lambert for the 1,600-meter title, and she cruised to victory in the 1,000. According to MileStat.com, it was her 13th consecutive victory in the 1,000.
St. Catherine’s finished with 200 points — 64 points ahead of second-place Norfolk Academy. The Saints won nine of the 15 events.
Parrish and her fellow seniors will compete in their final indoor track meet with St. Catherine’s next week at the VISAA championships.
“It’s great to have come this far and have all the hard work pay off,” said Parrish.
On the boys side, Woodberry Forest took the Prep League title, edging Fork Union Military Academy 141-132.
Michael Davenport set the tone for his team, setting a meet record of 22 feet, 5.25 inches in the long jump. He finished second in the 55-meter dash and third in the 300-meter dash, while leading off for the 800 relay team that set another meet record.
Drake Davis kept Fork Union in the competition for the top spot as one of the meet’s most impressive individual performers. He set a meet record in the 55-meter dash and the 300-meter dash and also won the high jump.
His victories plus two top-three finishes in the shot put and long jump made Davis the meet’s top overall performer, based on points. He was responsible for 42 of Fork Union’s 132 points.
The LIS and Prep League teams will be at the VISAA championships next Saturday at St. Christopher’s. St. Catherine’s and Woodberry Forest are the defending girls and boys champions, respectively.
