Students Lead Diversity Workshop

Seniors Domenic Crump and Diamond Stevens created a one-day workshop for local students.
Seniors Domenic Crump and Diamond Stevens love to attend conferences on the topics of diversity an inclusion.
So they decided why not hold their own event for local students?
This past Saturday more than 20 students representing St. Catherine’s, St. Christopher’s and Trinity Episcopal joined together for Explore RVA Diversity Conference held at St. Catherine’s.
“We came up with this idea because we love going to diversity conferences at other schools, and we thought it would be exciting to see what it takes to create one of our own,” Crump said. “The objective of the day was to educate our peers about relevant issues concerning inclusion in our community.”
The morning started with a video featuring interviews with various people from St. Catherine’s and the greater Richmond community. The video was created as part of Crump and Steven’s X-Term project. The interviews touched on the “Big Eight” social identifiers: ability, age, ethnicity, gender, race, religion, sexual orientation, and socio-economic status.
At the conclusion of the film and an icebreaker activity for the entire group, the students selected various small group discussion sessions to attend. Each session lasted 45 minutes and included topics such as sexual orientation, socio-economic status, religion, body image and gender, and academic and social achievement. Crump, Stevens and other St. Catherine’s students facilitated the discussions to keep the group engaged in thought-provoking dialogue.
“There is no simple solution to issues pertaining to diversity, but communication is definitely the key to understanding the differences and building a stronger community by respecting individuality,” said College Counseling assistant Tara Washington, who was the faculty advisor for the event.
